Buckie’s Second Chance

Four-year-old Buckie arrived at WAIF this summer a little worse for wear.

In a joint rescue effort with Penn Cove Veterinary Clinic, WAIF took in the handsome dilute ginger at the end of August. His left eye had sustained some trauma, and his teeth were in bad shape, but we knew that with a little love and time, our animal care team could get Buckie back on track for a happy, healthy life.

Our vet removed Buckie’s damaged eye and a few of his teeth, allowing him to heal and return to living without pain or discomfort. However, Buckie’s health journey wasn’t over. His blood work came back positive for Feline Immunodeficiency Virus.

Though there is no cure for FIV, cats who have it can live long, happy lives with proper care, including regular vaccinations and a healthy diet. FIV cannot pass to humans or other non-feline animals, and it can only pass to other cats through deep, puncturing bites. It cannot pass to other cats by sharing food or water bowls, bedding, or litter boxes, nor can it pass through grooming or cuddling.

Buckie is healing beautifully following his surgeries to remove his eye and teeth. Neither his illness nor his special needs are showing any signs of slowing him down! He is a friendly, gentle and affectionate cat with lots of love to give.

Next stop: home! Once Buckie’s recovery period is over, he will be ready to be adopted into his loving forever family.

Without our supporters, Buckie’s story might have had a different ending. We are grateful for the donors, volunteers, and community partners who made it possible for WAIF to give Buckie a second chance.
