2023 Adoption Statistics

We’re happy to share with you our 2023 statistics for our sheltering services. These numbers include our main shelter in Coupeville, along with our Oak Harbor Cat Adoption Center and Freeland Cat Cottage.

2023 Live Release Rate: 96.9% (97.5% dogs; 93.7% cats)

Animal Intakes: 676 (258 dogs, 418 cats)

  • Strays: 341 (115 dogs, 226 cats)
  • Owner Surrenders: 189 (50 dogs, 141 cats)
  • Transfer Intake from Partner Organizations: 26 cats
  • Other Intakes: 118 (93 dogs, 25 cats)

Live Outcomes: 651 (271 dogs, 380 cats)

  • Adoptions: 458 (120 dogs, 338 cats)
  • Returned to Owner: 188 (149 dogs, 39 cats)
  • Transfer to Partner Organizations: 2 dogs
  • TNR: 3 cats

*58% of lost dogs returned to their owners (national average is 22 – 25%), and 1.67% of lost cats returned to owners  national average is 2 – 4%).

Other Outcomes: 30 (5 dogs, 25 cats)

  • Died in Shelter: 9 (2 dogs, 7 cats)
  • Shelter Euthanasia: 21 (3 dogs, 18 cats)
