Adoption Statistics

We’re happy to share with you our 2016 statistics for our sheltering services. These numbers include both the City of Oak Harbor Animal Holding Facility and our main shelter in Coupeville, along with the Oak Harbor Cat Adoption Center and Freeland Cat Cottage.

2016 Overall Live Release Rate = 95%

Total Intake for 2016: 823 dogs and cats (an increase of 11.7%)

Dogs = 421 (unduplicated count from Oak Harbor and Coupeville shelters)
Cats = 402 (unduplicated count from Oak Harbor and Coupeville shelters)

Live Release Rate:*

Dogs = 99%
Cats = 91%
Total LRR = 95%

*Live Release Rate formula is percent of Live Outcomes to Total Outcomes. Nationally recognized standard is any shelter that saves above 90% of animals is indicative that the shelter is doing all they can to save all healthy and treatable animals in their care.

Other Highlights:

Dogs

Of the 421 Dogs coming into shelter (either Coupeville or Oak Harbor):

  • 169 (40%) were brought in by Animal Control
  • 146 (35%) were brought in by the Public
  • 85 (20%) were surrendered by owners
  • 14 (3%) were brought in for protective custody (counted separately from Animal Control number)
  • 7 (2%) were returned adoptions

Of the 383 Dog Live Outcomes:

  • 131 (34%) were adopted
  • 252 (66%) were returned to owner

Cats

Of the 402 cats taken into shelter (either Coupeville or Oak Harbor):

  • 29 (7%) were brought in by Animal Control
  • 238 (59%) were brought in by the public
  • 120 (30%) were surrendered by owners
  • 13 (3%) were returned adoptions
  • 2 (0%) were taken into protective custody ( counted separately from Animal Control number)

Of the 352 Cat Live Outcomes:

  • 330 (94%) were adopted
  • 22 (6%) were returned to owner

Died/PTS

There were 4 dogs and 26 cats Put to Sleep for the year
9 cats died in shelter undergoing treatment or DOA
0 dogs died in shelter

All other incoming animals remained in shelter at the end of the year.
